I heard an interesting story about the origins of the "Religious Right". The story goes that a while ago (maybe in the 1960s) Republicans deliberately set about infiltrating religeous groups in order to build these groups into a powerbase for their party. If this is true, then clearly they were very successful, and I suppose the article highlights the results.
Of course as a Christian I find the whole idea hugely offensive. Having the church systematically corrupted by a bunch of politicos is probably the most cynical political tactic imagineable. If I felt that these Christians in the US in any way represented Christianity, I'd be ashamed to be a Christian. As it is, I wonder if Jesus is ashamed of most of them.
